"Birth" by Alex Grey. From a functional perspective, birth is the opposite of death in that at the time of birth, the soul enters the physical world through the vehicle of the biological body. At the time of death, the soul exits the physical world and vacates this biological body. From the perspective of the soul's experience, however, birth and death both share a sacred interdimensional quality. In this painting, I depict the birth process,wherein a tremendous flow of energy goes through the mother. In the throes of childbirth, the mother emits a scream that echoes from her own birth, to her own death, portrayed as silhouettes to either side of her head. The child will remain connected to the mother via a subtle heart cord even as the umbilicus is severed.
